White Mouse Costume
A white mouse costume was sewn for a dramatic adaptation of an ancient representational story retold and interpreted by Nursi in his book "Words", chapter "8th Word". The roots of this ancient story is said to go back to the teachings of Buddha, translated by Persians in 6-7th centuries, then to Arabic in the 8th century (Bilawhar wa Yudasaf). The story then makes its way to Medieval Europe in the 11th century thanks to a Georgian Christian monk (Barlaam and Josaphat) and is recounted by Tolstoy in the 19th century in his "My Confession". His version of the representation appears in the movie Anna Karenina, 1996. Around the same time as Tolstoy, but probably unaware of his recounting based on the Christian tradition, Nursi too recounts the story based on the earlier Muslim tradition and references "Suhuf-u Ibrahim" (the book of Abraham). |
In Nursi's recounting, the white mouse symbolizes the "day" while the black mouse symbolizes the "night". These two mice gnaw on the tree branch the human is holding onto after falling in a well, symbolizing the transience of human life and the inevitable approach of death as days and nights pass... "Death" is represented by a lion standing at the mouth of the well.

The costume design, cloth cutting and sewing was done completely by the children.
